Advanced
Chiropractic
Chiropractic physicians who use
specific and advanced methods do much more than just fix
‘bad backs’; they are nerve and spinal specialists.
State-of-the-art chiropractic treatment can
dramatically treat and prevent many ailments.
One definition of chiropractic is,
“A health science built on the premise that within man
there is an intelligent, constructive force operating
through clearly defined channels. It is this life
force which generates, develops and maintains our
bodies from conception to grave.”
A misaligned and fixated bone of the
spine is called a vertebral subluxation complex (VSC)
because a subluxation can trigger an entire complex of
related problems. That is, when bones are out of
alignment, surrounding tissues—cartilage, muscles,
ligaments, tendons, nerves and blood vessels—can be
adversely affected.
The principle of subluxation—minor
misalignment and fixation of bones causing
major health problems—applies to the spine, skull
and entire skeleton.
Bones can become subluxated by
trauma during the birth process, especially with
prolonged or difficult labor and abnormal
presentations. The use of forceps, vacuum or caesareans
may increase the likelihood of spinal misalignment.
Other causes of misaligned spinal bones include falls,
sports injuries, auto accidents, work injuries and
repetitive motions. Subluxation can also be caused by
poor posture, abnormal sleep postures, improper pillows
and mattresses, poor general health and muscle
imbalance.
The VSC is not just a theory; it has
been confirmed by many researchers in chiropractic,
osteopathy, and medicine. C.H. Suh, a Ph.D. in
biomechanics, has stated: “The vertebral subluxation is
very real. We have documented it again and again… The
vertebral subluxation complex changes the entire health
of the body… (and) causes not only structural
dysfunction of the spine and adjacent tissues but also
causes nerve dysfunction.”
Nerve dysfunction—which means
the nervous system is not working correctly—is a very
common and serious problem. For example, in the neck
area it can lead to migraines, dizziness, depression,
heart arrhythmias, chest pain, ear ringing and eye
tremors.
The most common symptoms of nerve
pressure include pain, numbness, tingling, burning,
hot or cold sensations, itching, aching, cramping,
weakness or other abnormal sensations. However, VSC can
also be a silent process, like high blood
pressure, so you can’t rely on symptoms to
know whether vertebral subluxation exists.
Disorders caused by nerve pressure
can be divided into two categories:
neuro-musculo-skeletal (NMS) and organic.
Relief of NMS problems is what most
people associate with chiropractic. Relieving pain and
other neuro-musculo-skeletal symptoms is an important
goal. Advanced chiropractic care works wonders with
back and neck pain and radiation of nerve pressure
symptoms into the head, arms, and legs.
Organic or visceral
conditions are also regularly helped by corrective
chiropractic care.
I’ve assisted total cures or
significant improvements with the following disorders:
migraines, visual disturbances, loss of smell,
dizziness, hearing loss, tinnitus, sinus conditions,
allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, rapid or
irregular heart beat, recurrent infections, indigestion,
ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, colitis, Crohn’s
disease, bloating and excess gas, irritable bowel
syndrome, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, nervousness,
depression, infertility, erectile dysfunction, insomnia,
urinary urgency or difficulty, bedwetting, dysmenorrhea
and hemorrhoids.
These organic improvements are
possible because adjustments remove slight pressure from
nerves that connect the brain with every organ in the
body. I say ‘assisted’ because the body really does the
healing. A chiropractor’s role is to remove
interferences that block the natural expression of
health.
Many common symptoms are caused by
misalignment of the first two cervical vertebrae and an
abnormal neck curve. These common problems cause
pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
Unfortunately, only a small percentage of D.C.s use
specific techniques to correct the spine. As in any
profession, a wide spectrum exists in the quality of
care by D.C.s. It’s very important to select a
chiropractor who uses advanced methods.
I recommend a chiropractor who
practices corrective care, not just relief or
crisis treatment. That is, some D.C.s give only a few
adjustments until the pain is gone and then release the
patient. This ‘chiropractic aspirin’ approach gives
only temporary symptom relief.
Without long term corrective care,
vertebral subluxation still exists and the same or other
symptoms will return in time. Meanwhile, degenerative
joint changes and bodily dysfunction due to silent
nerve pressure negatively affects the patient.
That’s why a series of corrective adjustments and then
periodic supportive care is needed to properly treat VSC.
In summary, remember that any
skeletal bones, and most importantly the spinal
vertebrae, can become misaligned or fixated and put
slight pressure on blood vessels, nerves, and other soft
tissues. This, in turn, can cause many common symptoms
and diseases. Fortunately, subluxations can be treated
skillfully, safely and relatively inexpensively.
If you or your loved ones are
suffering and you think you’ve tried every possible
treatment, remember: you haven’t tried everything
unless you’ve tried specific chiropractic. That’s
why you need an outstanding D.C. as part of your
holistic health care team.
