How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM theory states that your body, like everything else in nature, is able to function at its best when in a state of balance. Many things in life can push your body toward imbalance: trauma, poor sleep, poor diet and so on. This imbalance can cause you to feel sick or experience pain. Acupuncture works by helping the body move back toward a balanced state. Small needles are gently placed at certain points throughout the body. They act as "flagpoles," alerting your body-mind to where imbalances are so it can begin to heal itself.
In 1997, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a review of the scientific evidence for acupuncture. The NIH panel concluded that acupuncture affects the body in several different ways, including: release of pain-inhibiting endorphins, endocrine function regulation, increased circulation and enhanced immune function. Thus, it can be seen that acupuncture affects several different areas of the body all at once, all without the many side effects of other types of treatment.
What Does Acupuncture Treat?
Acupuncture has been used to treat hundreds of different ailments over the centuries. The World Health Organization (WHO) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) endorse acupuncture for the treatment of over 140 conditions, including: muscle and joint pain, diarrhea, insomnia, TMJ, joint strain/sprain, sciatica, low energy, cataracts, stroke, infertility, abdominal pain, anxiety, allergies, headache, chemo side effects, carpal tunnel, rheumatoid arthritis, painful menstrual cycle, constipation, depression, asthma, hypertension, fibromyalgia, addictions, tennis elbow, erectile dysfunction, facial pain, labor induction, tooth pain, Bell's palsy, gall bladder stones, earache, fasciitis, gouty arthritis, obesity, PMS, rectal itching, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, IBS, morning sickness, gastritis, ulcers, labor induction, low back pain, stiff neck, ulcerative colitis, diabetes, lactation deficiency, post-herpetic neuralgia
