Inner Cleanse and Detoxification

Doris had only one bowel movement per week, drank very little water, and didn’t exercise—and her body showed it.  Only thirty seven years old, she experienced many health problems including heavy menstrual flows, chronic sinus, bloating, and fatigue.  Despite regular hygiene, she also had blemishes, body odor, and bad breath.

Not very radiant.

After starting a program of proper diet, more water, exercise, and chiropractic adjustments, her body began catching up with the waste removal load.  At first, she developed diarrhea for a few days—a good thing considering her inner toxicity.  Within two months her various symptoms were gone.  She now has daily bowel movements, her sinuses are clear, and her periods are symptom free.  She looks, acts, feels, and smells better!

The body produces waste products that must be regularly removed to maintain vibrant health.  Inner cleanliness is a new topic to many people, but an extremely important one for preventing internal toxicity and associated illness.

In a healthy person, waste products are routinely removed in five ways.  These primary eliminative routes and their associated organs are:

  •  bowel movements (intestines)
  •  urination (kidneys)
  •  sweating (sweat glands and skin)
  •  deep breathing (lungs)
  •  blood filtration (primarily the liver and kidneys)

Some people might consider these topics gross, but internal cleansing mechanisms are nothing to be embarrassed about.  Those who are uptight about these habits are more likely to ‘hold it in’ and become toxic.  The long term consequences of improper elimination are really gross so let’s discuss each route in more detail.

Bowel Movements
Orthodox advice says it’s normal for some people to have only a few bowel movements (BM) per week.  Natural health approaches consider that to be poor advice.  There’s a big difference between what is average and what is normal.  The average person suffers with gas, indigestion, and constipation, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal.

Your bowels should move easily about twice a day, be large in amount, and light to medium brown in color.  Although it shouldn’t smell like fresh flowers, your BM should not have an awful odor.  Straining out hard, dark, horrible smelling rabbit pellets a few times per week isn’t normal.

Let’s talk about intestinal gas for a moment.  Everyone has some; it’s a normal by-product of digestion.  However, excess gas and uncomfortable abdominal bloating are not normal.  Something is awry in your digestive system if you have gas frequently, in large amounts, and it causes people to run from the room in horror.

Regular bowel habits are assisted by regular exercise, healthy diet, adequate water intake, a proper nerve supply, and following the urge to eliminate as soon as possible.

If needed, supplements that can improve bowel movements include:

  • Probiotics, healthy bacteria to colonize the intestinal tract and aid optimal digestion
  • Digestive enzymes to assist breakdown of all food groups
  • Flax and/or fish oil to lubricate the inner intestinal walls
  • Fiber powder or bars to supplement dietary fibers

Other approaches to assist regular bowel movements include herbal colon cleanses, modified fasts, and colonics.
